Sam Cooke: Sam Cooke was a trailblazing R&B and soul singer whose smooth voice and crossover appeal helped shape modern pop and civil rights music. Beginning in gospel with the Soul Stirrers he transitioned to secular music in 1957 with You Send Me a #1 hit that showcased his angelic tone and elegance. He followed with classics like Chain Gang Cupid and Bring It On Home to Me blending romance and social awareness. Cooke was also a savvy businessman founding his own label and publishing company to gain creative control. His 1964 song A Change Is Gonna Come became an anthem of the civil rights movement. Tragically killed at 33 his influence endures. Sam Cooke’s vocal purity business acumen and cultural impact make him a foundational figure in R&B history.
