Caspian Sea, Earth’s largest inland waterbody (spanning 371,000 km²) and deepest lake (1,025 meters), borders five nations—Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan. A remnant of the ancient Paratethys Sea, its saline waters harbor 90% of the world’s sturgeon (source of beluga caviar) and vast oil/gas reserves. Despite its "sea" moniker, it’s technically a lake, fueling geopolitical disputes over resources. Threatened by pollution and falling water levels, this ecological and economic hub remains a unique natural and political crossroads.
