Anneliese Michel (1975–1976) A 23-year-old German woman diagnosed with epilepsy and psychosis was believed by her family and two Catholic priests to be possessed by six demons. After years of declining mental health and failed medical treatments, she underwent 67 exorcism sessions over ten months. Denied food and medical care during the rites, Michel died of malnutrition and dehydration. Her parents and priests were later convicted of negligent homicide. The case sparked international outrage and debate over the ethics of exorcism versus psychiatric treatment. Despite controversy, some Catholics view Michel as a martyr who endured suffering for faith, and her grave has become a pilgrimage site.
