Dumbo Octopus (Grimpoteuthis spp.): Named for its ear-like fins resembling Disney’s Dumbo, this deep-sea octopus lives at depths exceeding 10,000 feet, making it one of the deepest-living octopuses. It flaps its fins to swim gracefully through the abyss, unlike most octopuses that crawl or jet-propel. It has a soft, gelatinous body and short arms connected by a web. It feeds by swallowing small invertebrates whole. Unlike shallow-water relatives, it lacks ink sacs, unnecessary in the lightless deep. Its slow, dreamlike movement and alien appearance captivate scientists. Each species within the genus varies in size and color, but all thrive in extreme pressure, embodying the quiet beauty of the deep sea.
