Deep-Sea Dragonfish (Grammatostomias flagellibarba): This predatory fish is a master of deception in the dark ocean. It has a long, slender body with sharp fangs and a bioluminescent barbel extending from its chin, which it wiggles to lure prey. Unique among deep-sea animals, it produces red light—visible only to itself, as most deep-sea creatures cannot see red wavelengths. This gives it a private channel for hunting. It also has light organs along its body for camouflage via counter-illumination. Its jaw unhinges to swallow large prey. The dragonfish’s combination of stealth, weaponry, and private light makes it a fearsome and highly specialized predator of the midnight zone.
