Catatumbo Lightning Storms

The Catatumbo Lightning is an atmospheric phenomenon occurring over the Lake Maracaibo basin in Venezuela. Famous for its incredible frequency, this nearly continuous storm produces up to 280 lightning strikes per hour for over 200 nights a year. The unique combination of topography, wind patterns, and methane gas from surrounding marshes creates this spectacular, natural light show that is visible for great distances.
