Annapurna I, the world’s tenth-highest peak at 8,091 meters (26,545 feet), is arguably the deadliest 8,000-meter giant—with a climber fatality rate of 32%. Located in Nepal’s Annapurna Massif, its south face is a 3,000-meter wall of ice and avalanches. First summited in 1950 (the earliest 8,000er ascent), its name means "Goddess of Harvests" but demands brutal sacrifices. The nearby Annapurna Circuit trek contrasts its beauty with peril, where storms strike without warning. A Himalayan siren, luring climbers into a frozen gauntlet.
