The Lost Colony of Roanoke

Top 10 Mysterious Historical Disappearances

The Lost Colony of Roanoke: In 1587, 117 English settlers, led by John White, established a colony on Roanoke Island, off present-day North Carolina. White returned to England for supplies but was delayed by war. When he finally returned in 1590, the colony had vanished without a trace. The only clue was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a post and "CRO" on a tree. Theories suggest the settlers integrated with local Croatoan Native Americans, faced conflict with hostile tribes, succumbed to disease or famine, or attempted to sail back to England and perished at sea. Despite extensive archaeological research and analysis of local legends, no conclusive evidence has been found, leaving the fate of the "Lost Colony" one of America's oldest unsolved mysteries.
