The Mary Celeste: Found adrift in the Atlantic Ocean in December 1872, the merchant brigantine Mary Celeste was discovered by the crew of the Dei Gratia, sailing erratically but largely intact with its cargo of industrial alcohol mostly undisturbed. The lifeboat was missing, and the crew of seven, along with Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife, and daughter, had vanished. Personal belongings and a logbook with the last entry dated ten days prior remained. Theories include mutiny, piracy, seaquake, waterspouts, or explosive fumes from the alcohol cargo causing panic and a hasty abandonment. Despite being one of the most famous maritime mysteries, no definitive explanation has ever been proven.
