The Flannan Isles Lighthouse Keepers In December 1900, three lighthouse keepers—James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald McArthur—vanished from the remote Flannan Isles in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. When a relief crew arrived, they found the lighthouse abandoned, the doors bolted from the inside, and a badly damaged railing. The logbook’s last entry described stormy weather. No bodies were ever recovered. Theories range from being swept away by a massive wave to internal conflict or supernatural causes. The official inquiry concluded “from unknown causes,” cementing its status as one of the most chilling disappearances in lighthouse history.
