Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa): Masters of camouflage, stonefish blend perfectly with coral and rocks in the Indo-Pacific. They possess up to 13 dorsal spines loaded with venom that causes intense pain, swelling, tissue death, and, in severe cases, paralysis or heart failure. Stepping on one is the most common cause of envenomation. Immediate immersion in hot water and antivenom are crucial treatments. Their venom has been studied for potential medical uses, including painkillers. Despite their danger, stonefish are also prized in some cuisines when carefully prepared, highlighting the balance between risk and value in marine life.
