Pufferfish (Tetraodontidae family): Known for their ability to inflate into spiky balls when threatened, pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin, one of the most potent natural poisons. Found in tropical and subtropical oceans, their organs—especially liver and ovaries—are highly toxic. In Japan, trained chefs prepare fugu, a delicacy where improper handling can be fatal. Symptoms of poisoning include numbness, paralysis, and respiratory failure, often while the victim remains conscious. There is no antidote, making survival dependent on respiratory support. Despite the risks, demand for fugu persists, reflecting cultural traditions and the thrill of consuming a potentially lethal meal.
