Asian Carp (Hypophthalmichthys spp.): Introduced to the U.S. in the 1970s to control algae in aquaculture ponds, Asian carp—especially bighead and silver carp—escaped into rivers and now threaten the Great Lakes. They grow large, reproduce quickly, and consume vast amounts of plankton, starving native fish. Silver carp are notorious for leaping out of water when startled, injuring boaters. Their presence could collapse commercial and recreational fisheries. Electric barriers and nets aim to block their spread, but breaches remain a concern. Eradication is nearly impossible once established. The carp’s potential invasion of the Great Lakes represents one of North America’s most urgent ecological threats, highlighting the risks of introducing non-native filter feeders.
