Nutria (Myocastor coypus): Also known as coypu, this large, semi-aquatic rodent from South America was introduced for fur farming but escaped into wetlands across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. It feeds voraciously on vegetation, destroying marshes by uprooting plants and causing soil erosion. This habitat loss impacts fish, birds, and other wildlife. Nutria reproduce rapidly, with females breeding year-round and producing multiple litters. They damage levees, irrigation systems, and crops. Control includes trapping, hunting, and bounty programs—Louisiana even promotes nutria meat consumption. Despite efforts, they remain widespread. The nutria invasion demonstrates how fur trade introductions can lead to long-term environmental degradation in sensitive wetland ecosystems.
