Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea): The largest sea turtle, the leatherback, migrates over 10,000 miles annually from nesting beaches to feeding grounds. Females cross entire ocean basins, traveling from Indonesia to the west coast of the Americas. They feed almost exclusively on jellyfish, diving deeper than any other turtle—up to 4,000 feet. They navigate using Earth's magnetic field and ocean currents. After years at sea, females return to tropical shores to lay eggs, often near where they hatched. Threats include plastic bags (mistaken for jellyfish), fishing gear, and beach development. Their migration links distant marine ecosystems and underscores the global scale of conservation needed to protect endangered species.
