Hatra (Iraq)

Hatra was a magnificently fortified desert city in northern Iraq, flourishing as the capital of the first Arab kingdom. Renowned for its impressive blend of Greek, Roman, and Eastern architectural styles, it withstood Roman invasions due to its strong walls. As a major trading and religious center dedicated to the sun god Shamash, its grand ruins, including temples and columns, reflect its past prosperity before its eventual abandonment and modern tragic damage.
