Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis)

The saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis), often called the "Asian unicorn," is one of the world's rarest large mammals and was only discovered in 1992. This elusive bovine, native to the Annamite Mountains of Vietnam and Laos, is recognized by its striking white facial markings and long, elegant horns. With an estimated population of only dozens left, it faces critical threats from habitat loss and illegal snaring. No saola exists in captivity, making its conservation in the wild absolutely essential to prevent the extinction of this enigmatic and beautiful species.
