Sitovo Inscription: Found near Sitovo, Bulgaria, this inscription consists of symbols carved on a cave wall, believed to date to the late Neolithic or early Chalcolithic period (possibly 5000 BCE or later). The markings resemble a linear sequence of abstract signs, some similar to later Vinča symbols. However, its authenticity and status as true writing are debated—some scholars argue it may be decorative or symbolic rather than linguistic. No other similar inscriptions have been confirmed in the region. If genuine, it could represent one of Europe’s earliest attempts at written communication, but without context or parallels, it remains an isolated and mysterious artifact.
