Project MKUltra: Run by the CIA from the 1950s to 1973, MKUltra sought to develop mind control techniques through drugs (notably LSD), hypnosis, and psychological torture. Experiments were conducted on unwitting U.S. and Canadian citizens, including prisoners and mental patients. Most records were destroyed in 1973, but Senate investigations in the 1970s exposed parts of the program. Victims suffered long-term trauma. The cover-up involved false fronts, illegal surveillance, and suppression of evidence. MKUltra revealed the extent of government overreach in the name of Cold War security, leading to reforms but leaving many questions unanswered.
