The Black Shuck Dog of Bungay (1880s) A photograph allegedly taken outside St Mary’s Church in Bungay Suffolk appears to show a massive spectral hound with glowing eyes standing near the churchyard gate. Known as Black Shuck local legend tells of a demonic dog appearing before death or disaster. The image surfaced in the 1880s and was examined by Victorian spiritualists. No original negative exists but copies show unusual shadow density and lack of motion blur. Some analysts argue it is a double exposure while others believe environmental conditions may have created an optical illusion. The photo endures as a symbol of East Anglian folklore.
