The Fox Sisters' First Séance (1848) In Hydesville New York Kate and Margaret Fox reported hearing mysterious rapping sounds in their home which they later claimed were communications from a murdered peddler buried in the cellar. They developed a code with the spirit leading to public demonstrations. Their older sister Leah promoted the events launching the Spiritualist movement. Thousands attended séances across America and Europe. Though the sisters later confessed to producing the sounds themselves using toe joints skeptics debate whether all phenomena were faked. The case remains foundational in paranormal history for igniting global interest in mediumship.
