Leaf-Tailed Gecko (Uroplatus spp.): Found in Madagascar's rainforests, the leaf-tailed gecko is a master of disguise. Its body mimics tree bark or dead leaves with astonishing precision—its skin displays lichen-like patterns, bumps, and fringes that break up its outline. The tail resembles a decaying leaf, complete with notches and discoloration. It remains motionless during the day, aligning its body with branches to eliminate shadows. Some species can even adjust their color slightly to match their perch. Its large eyes provide excellent night vision for hunting insects. When threatened, it opens its mouth in a startling display, revealing a bright red interior to deter predators. This gecko’s camouflage is so effective that it was undiscovered by science until the 19th century.
