Red Sprites and Blue Jets

Red sprites and blue jets are electrical discharges that occur high above thunderstorms, far beyond regular lightning. Sprites are red, fleeting bursts that shoot upward toward the edge of space, while blue jets are cone-shaped blue flashes that propel upward from cloud tops. These transient luminous events are rarely seen from the ground and represent a mysterious and energetic layer of atmospheric physics that is still not fully understood by scientists.
