The Tuskegee Syphilis Study (1932–1972)

Top 10 Banned Scientific Experiments

The Tuskegee Syphilis Study (1932–1972): Conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service, this study observed the natural progression of untreated syphilis in 600 African American men in Alabama, 399 of whom were infected. Participants were misled, told they were receiving free healthcare for “bad blood,” and deliberately denied penicillin treatment even after it became available in the 1940s. The study continued for 40 years, resulting in unnecessary suffering, deaths, and transmission to spouses and children. Exposed in 1972, it caused national outrage, led to major bioethics reforms, and contributed to lasting mistrust in medical institutions among Black communities.
