Nirvana

Top 10 Greatest American Bands

Nirvana: Formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987, Nirvana spearheaded the grunge movement and brought alternative rock into the mainstream. Fronted by Kurt Cobain, the band’s raw sound and introspective lyrics resonated with Generation X. Their 1991 album Nevermind, featuring the anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit," became a cultural phenomenon, dethroning glam metal and shifting the music industry’s focus. Follow-up albums In Utero and MTV Unplugged in New York further showcased their depth and evolution. Cobain’s struggles with fame and addiction culminated in his suicide in 1994, ending the band. Despite a short career, Nirvana’s impact was profound, challenging commercialism and inspiring a wave of authentic, emotionally charged music. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
