The Velvet Underground: Formed in New York City in 1964, The Velvet Underground, led by Lou Reed and John Cale, created one of the most influential bodies of work in rock history. Their experimental sound blended rock, drone, and avant-garde, with lyrics addressing taboo subjects like drug use, sexuality, and urban decay. Their 1967 debut The Velvet Underground & Nico, produced by Andy Warhol, initially sold poorly but later became a landmark album. Though they achieved little commercial success, Brian Eno famously said everyone who bought the album started a band. Their influence spans alternative, punk, and indie rock. After multiple lineup changes and breakups, their legacy grew posthumously. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
