R.E.M.: Formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980, R.E.M. helped define alternative rock before it entered the mainstream. Known for Michael Stipe’s mumbled vocals, Peter Buck’s jangly guitar, and introspective lyrics, they gained a cult following with albums like Murmur and Reckoning. Their 1987 album Document brought mainstream success with “The One I Love” and “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).” In the 1990s, they achieved global fame with Out of Time and Automatic for the People, featuring hits like "Losing My Religion" and "Everybody Hurts." They maintained artistic integrity while navigating fame. R.E.M. disbanded in 2011, leaving a legacy of intelligent, melodic rock. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
