University of Al Quaraouiyine: Founded in 859 AD in Fez Morocco by Fatima al-Fihri the University of Al Quaraouiyine is recognized by UNESCO and Guinness World Records as the oldest existing and continually operating educational institution in the world. Originally a mosque and madrasa it evolved into a center of higher learning offering studies in Islamic theology Quranic studies jurisprudence astronomy and grammar. For centuries it attracted scholars from across the Muslim world and beyond playing a vital role in the transmission of knowledge during the Islamic Golden Age. Though formally accredited as a university in 1947 its uninterrupted teaching mission since the 9th century makes it a landmark of educational history and a symbol of enduring intellectual pursuit.
