Charles University: Charles University in Prague founded in 1348 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV is the oldest university in Central Europe and one of the oldest in the world. Established to serve the Czech lands and the broader empire it became a major center for theology law medicine and liberal arts. It attracted scholars from across Europe and played a key role in the intellectual life of the region. Jan Hus a key figure in the pre-Reformation movement was associated with the university. Despite religious and political upheavals including periods of closure it was restored and continued its mission. Today Charles University is a leading research institution in the Czech Republic maintaining its historic legacy while advancing science and humanities in the modern era.
