University of Padua: Established in 1222 in Padua Italy the University of Padua broke from Bologna to champion academic freedom allowing scholars to teach and study without political or religious censorship. It quickly became a leading European center for medicine law philosophy and astronomy. Galileo Galilei taught here from 1592 to 1610 advancing scientific thought. The university was also the first in Europe to award a degree to a woman Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia in 1678. Its anatomical theater and botanical garden founded in 1545 are the oldest in the world.
