Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius): Despite their bulky appearance hippos are among Africa’s most dangerous animals. Weighing up to 3200 kg they can run up to 19 mph on land and are highly aggressive especially when protecting calves or territory. They possess massive jaws with canine teeth up to 20 inches long capable of crushing a crocodile or capsizing a canoe. Responsible for more human deaths in Africa than lions they attack boats and people who venture too close to riverbanks. Nocturnal grazers they spend days submerged in water to prevent sunburn. Highly social in herds led by dominant males they become extremely violent if challenged. Their unpredictable temperament and sheer power make them a formidable threat in their natural environment.
