Wolverine (Gulo gulo): Often called the "skunk bear" the wolverine is a tenacious predator and scavenger of northern boreal forests and tundra. Weighing only 40 to 60 pounds it possesses a stocky build strong jaws and sharp claws. Despite its size it will attack animals much larger including deer and moose especially in deep snow. It defends its kills fiercely driving off wolves and even bears. Solitary and elusive it has an enormous home range and incredible stamina. Known for its fearlessness and intelligence it plays a vital role in cleaning carcasses and regulating prey populations. Its ferocity is legendary in indigenous folklore and modern wildlife biology.
