Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer): Also known as the African buffalo this massive bovine is one of the "Big Five" and notoriously dangerous. Weighing up to 1900 pounds they live in large herds and are equipped with sharp curved horns fused into a bone shield called a "boss." Though primarily grazers they are highly unpredictable and aggressive when threatened. Wounded or isolated individuals are especially deadly often charging at high speed. They are known to circle back and ambush hunters and have killed lions in self-defense. Considered responsible for more hunter fatalities in Africa than any other animal they command deep respect. Their resilience and group defense strategies make them a symbol of untamed African wildlife.
