Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis): A subspecies of brown bear the grizzly is a massive and powerful omnivore found in North America. Weighing up to 800 pounds males have a pronounced shoulder hump and long claws used for digging and attacking. Though they eat plants berries and fish they are also skilled predators capable of killing elk moose and bison. Grizzlies are extremely territorial and may attack humans perceived as threats especially when protecting cubs or food. Their speed strength and endurance make them formidable in confrontations. While most avoid humans some become habituated to human areas increasing conflict risk. Their presence signifies healthy wilderness ecosystems.
