Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS): CCUS technologies capture carbon dioxide emissions from industrial sources or directly from the air, then transport and store it underground or convert it into useful products. This helps reduce atmospheric CO₂, especially from cement, steel, and power plants where emissions are unavoidable. Direct Air Capture (DAC) plants, like those by Climeworks, actively remove legacy carbon. Stored CO₂ can be mineralized or used in fuels, plastics, or building materials. While energy requirements and costs remain challenges, policy support and innovation are accelerating deployment. CCUS is not a substitute for emission reductions but a vital complement for achieving net-zero goals. By mitigating industrial emissions and enabling carbon removal, CCUS strengthens climate strategies and supports a circular carbon economy.
